Free algebra games, lesson plans and curricula for all ages

Looking for some resources to help teach algebra? There are some really phenomenal ones online, absolutely free.

Here are some of the best.

(Note that some sites offer multiple types of resources, but are listed in the section of their greatest strengths. For instance, CK-12 is listed under free textbooks but it also provides free lesson plans and videos.)

Curricula:

  • Math is Fun offers an online curricula with step by step information on exponents, logarithms, polynomials, functions, quadratic equations and more. Each topic is covered with short, simple explanations, illustrations and lots of examples. Pre-algebra and Algebra 2 (college level) are also offered.
  • Number Nut offers pages that explain pre-algebra subjects such as graphing, roots, exponents and variables.
  • GeoGebra is free and multi-platform mathematics software for all levels of education that joins geometry, algebra, tables, graphing, statistics and calculus. It is available online or as an app.

Lesson Plans:

  • Illuminations offers hundreds of free lesson plans, activity pages, games and more that can be sorted by grade level.
  • Jamie York Press offers a free 14-day lesson plan that introduces algebra at the middle school level in a Waldorf teaching style (PDF file).
  • Math = Love is a math teacher’s blog that features many, many pages of algebra games, activities, lesson plans and general inspiration for teaching algebra such as this post about how her students use notebooking for algebra.

Worksheets:

  • Math Aids offers lots of algebra worksheets.

Textbooks:

  • CK-12 offers many free algebra flexbooks, videos and lesson plans online for grades 6-12.

Videos:

  • MATHFlix offers videos on algebra and other higher math topics. The teachers’ section offers an impressive complete, outlined algebra curriculum of video lessons.
  • Khan Academy, the king of all free math resources, offers videos and more on algebra and all other math topics. Parents can sign up as coaches and track their students’ progress, assign tasks and more.

Games:

  • Kids Math TV offers lots of math games that reinforce algebra and pre-algebra skills.
  • Math Game Time lets kids play fun algebra games online. The site also features algebra videos and printable worksheets.
