{"id":654,"date":"2010-03-27T04:07:54","date_gmt":"2010-03-27T04:07:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/magicalchildhood.wordpress.com\/?p=654"},"modified":"2010-03-27T04:07:54","modified_gmt":"2010-03-27T04:07:54","slug":"why-i-love-teacher-tom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/magicalchildhood.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/27\/why-i-love-teacher-tom\/","title":{"rendered":"Why I Love Teacher Tom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been following Teacher Tom&#8217;s blog for a little while now.\u00a0 Teacher Tom is a preschool teacher who gives me all sorts of wonderful ideas, especially for making outside spaces child-friendly.\u00a0 He also just has a wonderful love of children that I enjoy reading.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"http:\/\/teachertomsblog.blogspot.com\/2010\/03\/well-just-have-to-do-it-again.html?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TeacherTom+(Teacher+Tom)\">today&#8217;s post<\/a> on his blog perfectly sums up why I adore him.<\/p>\n<p>He was inspired by <a href=\"www.playbasedlearning.com.au\/2010\/01\/make-it-irresistible-create-miniature-houses\/\">these blocks<\/a> (so am I!) and decided to try to make some with his students.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_A9GusUZeeIA\/S6ypL_C26hI\/AAAAAAAAA2M\/ts3xFkdMhik\/s320\/P1230604.JPG.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now anybody who&#8217;s been around the internet block a time or two knows that when most folks are inspired by projects for children online, they try to recreate them to absolute perfection, and then document the steps in 25 photoshopped, frame-worthy pictures.\u00a0 The final result usually belongs in a high end Etsy shop or an art gallery.<\/p>\n<p>It also tends to look like it requires so much trouble, so much artistic skill, so many expensive supplies and so much time that I just forget about it and get out the playdough.<\/p>\n<p>This is how Teacher Tom recreated the project with his kids.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_A9GusUZeeIA\/S6ypBF1XUbI\/AAAAAAAAA2E\/2a-4_ODwKz0\/s320\/040310+040.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"248\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_A9GusUZeeIA\/S6yn7zk6kGI\/AAAAAAAAA1c\/DoiUx9h5MxA\/s320\/IMG_1323.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And more.\u00a0 Glorious messes galore.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_A9GusUZeeIA\/S6yn_SsHc3I\/AAAAAAAAA1k\/drqoI9iQqDI\/s320\/IMG_1326.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_A9GusUZeeIA\/S6yoBX5PfxI\/AAAAAAAAA1s\/QRx-K2FFPNI\/s320\/IMG_1327.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And the final bit, that made me smile like mad?\u00a0 Just as I was thinking &#8220;I wonder what special paint he used and if he&#8217;s coating it with varnish,&#8221; he mentioned it was plain old tempera paint&#8230; and it rained that night and it probably all washed off so &#8220;I guess we&#8217;ll just have to do it again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And you know what, I&#8217;ve done THAT craft!\u00a0 The kids do love it.\u00a0 We did it on big rocks and cement border stones, but they had a blast (me too, actually!).\u00a0 And it did wash off, and we did do it again.<\/p>\n<p>I have scrap wood in the back yard and I have lots of tempera paint.\u00a0 I know some kiddos who would love to make that pile into some fabulous, tacky, gloppy, beautiful, colorful, perfect blocks.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you, Teacher Tom, for crafting for the kids.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been following Teacher Tom&#8217;s blog for a little while now.\u00a0 Teacher Tom is a preschool teacher who gives me all sorts of wonderful ideas, especially for making outside spaces child-friendly.\u00a0 He also just has a wonderful love of children that I enjoy reading.
