I’m not sure how it happened, but somehow or other
\nI got a little sentimental tonight
\nand started thinking about this po<\/span><\/span><\/strong>em
\nand motherhood
\nand wanted to share it with you.<\/p>\n

It’s been on my web site for years
\nand I have always thought it summed up my feelings for my children
\nperfectly.<\/p>\n

Since I wrote it I have had two more children,
\ntwo boys to add to the girls,
\ntwo more sets of eyes,
\nso I’ve had to update it from the original
\nbut the feelings are the same.<\/p>\n

Forgive the bit of sentimentality…<\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong>Flight
\n
\nI know women
\nwho would lose their children
\nlike throwing off a robe,
\nunbraiding a red ribbon
\nand discarding it, to let
\ntheir wild self fly free.<\/p>\n

I know women
\nwho put aside their children
\nlike cheap jewelry by the side of the bed.
\nI know women
\nwho never seem to wear them at all.<\/em><\/p>\n

My children, I do not want
\nto be free of you.
\nYou are like my wedding rings
\nwhich I could easily slip out of
\nbut wear
\nevery day that my heart beats.<\/p>\n

I want you near me.
\nMy boys, my girls, my husband,
\nwhen I see a sunset
\nI want these two eyes
\nto be part of the twelve who see it.
\nI want our laughter and stories
\nto be so tangled
\nthat our memories weave into one dream.<\/p>\n

This is my time with you.<\/p>\n

Soon enough, you will be off
\nswimming your own new seas.
\nSoon enough, we will step back and watch you
\nblooming and bursting in solitary ways
\nin your own fresh, separate skins.<\/p>\n

How could I waste this?<\/p>\n

Oh my darlings, you are not my cage.
\nYou are my wings.<\/p>\n
