&#8212; making applesauce and apple cider from extra apples on friends&#8217; trees, grape jelly from Grandma&#8217;s backyard grapevines, salsa from flats of tomatoes from the farm family down the highway, and so on.\u00a0 I love this season and I love that Daryl and I have taught ourselves these old fashioned skills and are teaching them to our kids, but it is a lot of work and I will also love the slower pace of winter once the apples, zucchinis, tomatoes, pumpkins and other goodies have all been dealt with.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">We&#8217;ve also been busy with making the most of fall &#8212; lots of hiking and outings, nature studies and so on.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">Magical Childhood is always busy this time of year, when <a href=\"http:\/\/magicalchildhood.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/31\/what-should-a-4-year-old-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">What Should a Four Year-Old Know?<\/span><\/a> gets shared again and brings a new flurry of visitors.\u00a0 Many of you know it was also shared in Huffington Post last month, and it was translated into another handful of languages.\u00a0 Another neat thing is that a community magazine in North Dakota asked to reprint my article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/article\/10-things-to-do-instead-of-yelling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">10 Things to Do Instead of Yelling<\/span><\/a>, which is one of my favorite articles from my parenting columns at examiner.com.\u00a0 I&#8217;m trying to finish up the Magical Childhood book at last, too, but to be honest I am more than a little flaky about finishing it and I tend to go off and play when I should be working.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 Perhaps saying it here will help motivate me to get back to work!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">And that&#8217;s enough yapping out of me.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\"><strong>Here&#8217;s a few ways to make some memories with your kiddos this week&#8230;..<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>1.\u00a0 Make some leaf art, like <a href=\"http:\/\/colormekatie.blogspot.com\/2011\/07\/something-old-to-something-new.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color:#008000;\">Color Me Katie<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong> She punched out little hearts from dead leaves and then created whimsical vines and such around her neighborhood with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm7.staticflickr.com\/6013\/5958120617_352e18ccb0.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff0000;\"><strong>2.\u00a0 Wear fancy clothes all day, just because.<\/strong>\u00a0 We&#8217;ve had a whole stash of thrift store costumes, capes and prom dresses for years to make an ordinary Monday seem more special.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5043\/5339975446_1f05346885.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_NBy0oHopC1I\/TKNnn4RnE2I\/AAAAAAAACKY\/LoEfC2TSaL8\/s400\/IMG_8977.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><strong>3.\u00a0 Take your child out for coffee or dessert.\u00a0<\/strong> Head out someplace, just the two of you, to enjoy some lazy conversation over something tasty.\u00a0 Take the time to really talk (and listen!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\"><strong>4.\u00a0 Bring the kiddie pool inside and fill it with fun nature items like dried leaves and seed pods.\u00a0<\/strong> Spread a sheet out underneath it to help with cleanup.\u00a0 To make it even more fun, give your little one some markers to decorate the leaves and items.\u00a0 Be sure to involve the kids in the clean up!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\"><strong>5.\u00a0 Make pumpkin pie playdough.\u00a0<\/strong> We made this every fall for years and I need to make it up again soon (I&#8217;m going to try swapping corn flour for the flour for my gluten free little guy this time).\u00a0 It smells heavenly and is so much fun to play with!\u00a0 Note that this makes a lot (we have a lot of kids!), so feel free to use some math with the kids and make smaller batches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\"><strong>Pumpkin Pie Playdough Recipe<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">5-1\/2 cups flour<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">2 cups salt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">8 teaspoons of cream of tartar<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">1 container (1-1\/2 oz) of pumpkin pie spice\u00a0 <em>( If you don\u2019t have pumpkin pie spice, just substitute cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves, or whatever combination of them you have on hand!)<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">3\/4 cup oil<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">orange food coloring (2 parts yellow, 1 part red)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">4 cups water<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">Mix all ingredients. Cook and stir over medium heat until all lumps disappear. Knead the dough on a floured surface until it is smooth. Store in a plastic bag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">Note:\u00a0 For extra sensory fun, you can also let the kids press in some clean roasted pumpkin seeds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008080;\"><strong>6.\u00a0 Start a recipe box or cookbook of family recipes you teach your child.\u00a0<\/strong> Bake and cook them together and write each one out as you teach it to add to the collection.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t know very many?\u00a0 Learn together!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#800000;\">7.\u00a0 Make some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avalon-arts.com\/studio\/fall.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color:#800000;\">fall projects<\/span><\/a> like twig looms.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.avalon-arts.com\/studio\/newgraphics\/smalltwigloom.jpg\" width=\"195\" height=\"180\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#808000;\"><strong>8.\u00a0 Write a letter to your child all about who he is right now, what he loves and why you love him.<\/strong>\u00a0 Tuck it into someplace safe for the future.\u00a0 Be sure to show him or tell him all those things too!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#333399;\"><strong>9.\u00a0 Stick a giant piece of clean contact paper to a window (sliding glass doors are also perfect) and gather up an assortment of seasonal pretties for your child to stick to it.<\/strong>\u00a0 You can use fall leaves, squares of colorful tissue paper, shapes cut from construction paper, natural items like milkweed fluff, you name it.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\"><strong>10.\u00a0 Be outrageously silly at odd times, for no reason, all day long!\u00a0<\/strong> Suddenly widen your eyes and say, &#8220;Oh no! I forgot to give you noisy kisses!&#8221; and scoop up your toddler.\u00a0 Stick your tongue out and grin at your teenager.\u00a0 Be silly as much as you possibly can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">And with that, magical people, I&#8217;m off to do the oh-so-magical task of several loads of laundry.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/strong><em><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">Perhaps I&#8217;ll tickle some small people on my way&#8230;.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">Have a wonderful week.<\/span><\/em><strong><em><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/strong><em><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\"> Don&#8217;t forget to take care of you!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Happy Monday!
