Long time no see!\u00a0 Sorry for being so quiet.\u00a0 All is good here.\u00a0 We’ve been busy with Baby Fiona (now 9 months old!), the Wilder Pageant<\/a> (the 8th year for the girls!), time at the lake to beat the heat and other fun things.<\/em><\/p>\n

I stumbled across this poem today and I thought I’d share it.\u00a0 I wrote it for a friend’s son when he was six and he is now a young man with a child of his own.\u00a0 Boy does that make me feel old!\u00a0 \ud83d\ude09\u00a0 I think it’s good advice for all of us, though, and it seemed like a good way to pop back in and get back to yapping with you all…<\/em><\/p>\n

American Music<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Anthony, I remember it all:
\nDancing barefoot in your living room
\nTo the Violent Femmes and your mother’s laugh…
\nMaking a snow-beast,
\nFinding the kittens,
\nYou playing with my feet.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I held your hand as we crossed streets<\/strong><\/span>
\n And stepped out of pick-ups.<\/strong><\/span>
\n You laughed when I mimicked Aunt Lillian,<\/strong><\/span>
\n Hugged me every time I left<\/strong><\/span>
\n And remembered me when I returned.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Oh Anthony, I missed a year<\/strong><\/span>
\n And you grew up completely.<\/strong><\/span>
\n You hate the Femmes<\/strong><\/span>
\n And don’t like dancing. You find me odd<\/strong><\/span>
\n And go off to watch cable.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

You are six<\/strong><\/span>
\n And as old as your mother,<\/strong><\/span>
\n Both of you<\/strong><\/span>
\n Like playmates out of reach, wild things<\/strong><\/span>
\n That wised up and moved on.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sweet child, I know that growing<\/strong><\/span>
\n Is the biggest part of living.<\/strong><\/span>
\n But please, for that child in you,<\/strong><\/span>
\n That piece of your mother, that bit of the past,<\/strong><\/span>
\n For the dark and the bright and the never,<\/strong><\/span>
\n What your mother lost and your mother dared,<\/strong><\/span>
\n My sweet thing, sometimes,<\/strong><\/span>
