{"id":1955,"date":"2012-06-10T19:42:15","date_gmt":"2012-06-10T19:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/magicalchildhood.wordpress.com\/?p=1955"},"modified":"2012-06-10T19:42:15","modified_gmt":"2012-06-10T19:42:15","slug":"youre-still-a-fabulous-mother","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/magicalchildhood.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/10\/youre-still-a-fabulous-mother\/","title":{"rendered":"You&#8217;re (Still) a Fabulous Mother"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4001\/4597239582_cc0389c9df.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Victoria Bayer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color:#993300;\"><em>(One of the nice things about having written A Magical Childhood for so many years is that I have lots of archives to dig up and share again every once in a while!\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a favorite of mine from May 2010 that I thought deserved to be said again.)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">I&#8217;ve been hearing lately from mothers who say how stressed they are and what terrible mothers they think they are.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">What?\u00a0 Oh pah.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">If you\u2019re thinking along the same lines, I\u2019m\u00a0 here to tell you to stop it.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">You rock.\u00a0 You\u2019re a fabulous mother.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">How do I know this?\u00a0 Well, first off because you\u2019re beating yourself up and only people who care feel guilt, which means you\u2019re a caring mother.\u00a0 So that right there tells me a lot about you.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">Second of all, you\u2019re the sort of mother who reads books about making lives magical for her children.\u00a0 That sort of says a lot about you too!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">Third of all, most mothers are more fabulous than they give themselves credit for.\u00a0 It\u2019s a mother thing.\u00a0 We also tend to think other mothers are exponentially better than we are at absolutely everything.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">And fourth of all, no matter what sort of beastly mother you think you are, I\u2019m willing to bet that your child still thinks you\u2019re the best mom in the world.\u00a0 Even if said child won\u2019t admit it.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">You\u2019re a fabulous mother.\u00a0 You\u2019re loving.\u00a0 You care.\u00a0 You\u00a0 have things you rock at.\u00a0 Many of them.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">Do you sometimes screw up?\u00a0 Yep.\u00a0 So do I.\u00a0 Do you sometimes yell or throw shoes at the wall?\u00a0 Maybe.\u00a0 I have.\u00a0 Do you have times when you lose it a lot and feel like a troll? It happens.\u00a0 But it gets better.\u00a0 And you\u2019re still a fabulous mother.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">Here\u2019s the wonderful thing about being a mother.\u00a0 Every second is a fresh start.\u00a0 If you screw up you can not screw up the next minute and it goes an awfully long way.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">Hug your kids.\u00a0 Say you\u2019re sorry.\u00a0 Be silly.\u00a0 Let things go.\u00a0 Try again.\u00a0 It\u2019s all part of the crazy ride of motherhood.\u00a0 None of us is perfect at it.\u00a0 But most of us are far more fabulous than we give ourselves credit for.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">And while you\u2019ve been reading this, another fresh start has begun.\u00a0 Go do something good.\u00a0 Not just for the kids, but for you too.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">Now, go off and be fabulous.\u00a0 You can do it.\u00a0 You do it again and again.\u00a0 You\u2019re raising people who will make the world a little better, in part because of your mothering.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#808000;\">Thanks for that.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(One of the nice things about having written A Magical Childhood for so many years is that I have lots of archives to dig up and share again every once in a while!\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a favorite of mine from May 2010 that I thought deserved to be said again.)
