an ice cube tray would work too)<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>Eye droppers or pipettes (one per child)<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/farm7.staticflickr.com\/6054\/7018094901_a7f3e7a09a_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\"><strong>Instructions:<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\"><strong>Fill the muffin tins half full with the vinegar, and tint each cup with a different color of food coloring.\u00a0 We usually leave one clear so kids can mix a custom color.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\"><strong>Pour one box of baking soda into a cake pan for each child.\u00a0 Smooth out.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\"><strong>Spread an old towel on the table (or do it outside) and put the cake pan(s), muffin tin and eye droppers on it.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#ff6600;\"><strong>Show kids how to squeeze the eye droppers in the colored vinegar to fill them up, then have them drizzle and drop it on the baking soda to watch what happens.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><strong>This large amount of baking soda means that kids can happily do the activity for a good long time, making this a perfect activity for while you&#8217;re making lunch or taking a break.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/magicalchildhood.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/bs3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1998 alignleft\" title=\"bs3\" src=\"http:\/\/magicalchildhood.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/03\/bs3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7122\/7018101511_fce08b3b01_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"179\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff00ff;\"><strong>Kids can also experiment with things like pushing the eye dropper under the baking soda and then squeezing (tiny volcanoes!) and so on.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm7.staticflickr.com\/6218\/7018096763_cf8c9bf620_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm7.staticflickr.com\/6236\/7018097107_528fdb8399_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"150\" \/> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><strong><em><span style=\"color:#008000;\">Science info:\u00a0<\/span> Want to know why baking soda and vinegar bubble up?\u00a0 Explain to the kids that carbon dioxide is released when acids (like vinegar) and bases (like baking soda) combine and react to each other.\u00a0 If they want to do more colorful science to learn about acids and bases, consider <a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/homeschooling-in-mankato\/the-purple-cabbage-ph-experiment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the purple cabbage pH experiment<\/a> (our family&#8217;s all time favorite science experiment).\u00a0 You can also just bake something!\u00a0 People make cakes and breads rise by either using yeast or relying on the same reaction with ingredients like baking soda and buttermilk.\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#0000ff;\"><strong>Have fun!<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a fun way to occupy the kids in a bubbly, colorful way.
