{"id":1839,"date":"2012-02-02T05:34:40","date_gmt":"2012-02-02T05:34:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/magicalchildhood.wordpress.com\/?p=1839"},"modified":"2012-02-02T05:34:40","modified_gmt":"2012-02-02T05:34:40","slug":"do-something-brave-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/magicalchildhood.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/02\/do-something-brave-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Do Something Brave Month!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joeydevilla.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/where-the-magic-happens.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"339\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color:#ff0000;\">We&#8217;re doing a family challenge for the month of February that I thought others might like to join in on.\u00a0<\/span><\/em> We&#8217;re designating it <strong>Do Something Brave Month<\/strong>, and challenging ourselves to each do 20 brave things to earn a family reward.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color:#ff0000;\">What counts as brave?\u00a0<\/span><\/em> Anything outside your comfort zone that could lead to good things but feels a little scary.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff0000;\">Some examples (for big and little people)&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Go to sleep with the lights out<\/li>\n<li>Approach someone you&#8217;d like to befriend and start a conversation<\/li>\n<li>Audition for a play<\/li>\n<li>Jump into the deep end for the first time<\/li>\n<li>Sign up for a club or class<\/li>\n<li>Ask for a raise<\/li>\n<li>Stand up for someone (including yourself)<\/li>\n<li>Sing in public<\/li>\n<li>Face a phobia and take a step towards kicking it<\/li>\n<li>Climb a tree<\/li>\n<li>Send out a book proposal<\/li>\n<li>Go into the basement alone<\/li>\n<li>Compliment a stranger<\/li>\n<li>Write an author to say you love her book<\/li>\n<li>Get a daring haircut<\/li>\n<li>Go up high and look down<\/li>\n<li>Sign up for a half marathon<\/li>\n<li>Quit a bad habit<\/li>\n<li>Try out for a sport<\/li>\n<li>Look under the bed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Obviously, these should be tasks that are a little bit scary for <em>you<\/em>.\u00a0 Petting a dog would be a great challenge for a child afraid of dogs, but not for someone who is always around them!\u00a0 <span style=\"color:#ff0000;\">Each thing should be <em>safe<\/em> and <em>positive<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These can be small steps that help deal with shyness, fears and hesitations.\u00a0 Keep it doable!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff0000;\"><strong>Want to join in?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span> <em>Pick a family goal<\/em> (we&#8217;re doing 20 each, for me and the four older kids, so a total of 100 brave things for the month) <em>and a reward<\/em> (we&#8217;re taking a trip to the Mall of America for the first time as a family so we can hang out with wonderful friends and see LEGO Land for the first time!).\u00a0 <em>Also decide on rules.\u00a0<\/em> For instance, we decided that we can do more than one a day and that we can do extra to help the family out (for instance, if one family member is short on her\/his 20, we can do extras to make the family goal).\u00a0<em> Focus on making it positive and possible!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re tracking our points on the calendar, with a different color of pen for each of us to log our accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff0000;\"><strong>Are you in?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span> Feel free to jump in any time and tailor it to suit your family!\u00a0 <em>I&#8217;d love to hear some of your challenges in the comments if you do join in.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#ff0000;\"><strong>Here&#8217;s to making some magic happen.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude42<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re doing a family challenge for the month of February that I thought others might like to join in on.\u00a0 We&#8217;re designating it Do Something Brave Month, and challenging ourselves to each do 20 brave things to earn a family reward.
