{"id":1163,"date":"2010-10-17T05:24:20","date_gmt":"2010-10-17T05:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/magicalchildhood.wordpress.com\/?p=1163"},"modified":"2010-10-17T05:24:20","modified_gmt":"2010-10-17T05:24:20","slug":"surviving-alex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/magicalchildhood.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/17\/surviving-alex\/","title":{"rendered":"Surviving Alex"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>Last week, we stopped in front of the town drugstore to peek at a sidewalk sale going on.\u00a0 I saw a delightfully whimsical watermelon serving dish with a leaf-handled spreading knife and checked the tag &#8212; on clearance for $4.99.\u00a0 I have no use for watermelon serving dishes but I loved the look of it. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>Daryl could tell and he bought it for me. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>I was in love with it.\u00a0 So in love with it, as a matter of fact, that I had him drive back home to drop it off before we left for grocery shopping, lest it get broken during the day&#8217;s trek.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>At the grocery store, I indulged in spreads and cheeses and organic crackers to make a lovely appetizer feast for us to christen the watermelon bowls with.\u00a0 I picked out a mascarpone cheese to mix with real maple syrup for one bowl, planned dips and spreads for the others.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>All week I have protected my dish.\u00a0 I am not a fan of putting things away to use &#8220;someday&#8221; and I know the risks I take in using things with four children in the house.\u00a0 I happily put my colorful treasure out, but watched it like a hawk. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>All of the children watched out for it.\u00a0 They knew how special it was to me and they treated it with extra care.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>Except one.\u00a0 Of course.\u00a0 Three year-old Alex has no concept of words like breakable, no matter how many times he has real world experience with it &#8212; and he has a lot.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>And of course, you know what&#8217;s coming.\u00a0 He broke it, tonight, while my girls were helping to decorate for a friend&#8217;s wedding reception and the boys were playing playdough at the table. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>He didn&#8217;t just accidentally knock it off the table or anything innocent like that.\u00a0 He put his playdough in it and stabbed it repeatedly with its own little leaf-handled spreading knife, while I was in the next room.\u00a0 The sound registered too late. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>So much for whimsical watermelon serving dishes.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4133\/5088413268_213331fc31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>He apologized a lot.\u00a0 I know he&#8217;s sorry.\u00a0 We cleaned it up.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>The children were all very upset on my behalf.\u00a0 They gave me hugs.\u00a0 They offered to glue it.\u00a0 They glared at Alex. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>I have learned so much from parenting each of my children.\u00a0 We tend to learn the most from the hardest times.\u00a0 And there are some times that don&#8217;t teach us anything new and we just have to get through. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#008000;\"><strong>I usually try to find some lesson in the times that make me craziest.\u00a0 I look for bright sides and deeper meanings.\u00a0 I put a spin on it.
