The New York Public Library collected this list of 100 picture books every child should know. How many have you and your kiddos read together? Why not start a quest to track down any that you haven’t read and then pick your favorites? If you think they have any books left off that should be on the list, please add them in the comments!
I personally would add…
- A Fairy Went A-Market
- More, More, More! Said the Baby
- Kiss the Cow
- Crictor
- There’s a Nightmare in my Closet
- Miss Rumphius
- Mama, Do You Love Me?
As for our number, it’s 55. I would have sworn we’d know more with all the reading we do! Now I have some new books to look for at the library.
So what’s your number? And what would you add? I’d love to hear your favorites!
Only 60 for us! Like you, we are huge readers and I was sure we’d have read most of the titles. I was surprised we’d only read 60. I’m not sure what I would add… but it makes me think that it would be fun to put together our own list of our family’s 100 favorites. Thanks for sharing the link!
Yes, I thought we’d have read almost all of them! 🙂 Great idea about making up our own lists. I bet we could reach 100 a lot faster than we thought! I’d love to see other people’s full lists too.
Thanks for posting the list!
Wow, we only had 14 – So many good books to look forward to. Thanks for posting the link.
LJ – Almost Unschoolers.
Re: Thanks for posting the list!
You do have a lot to look forward to! When my girls were little I remember having a list like this and taking it to the library once a week just to look for another handful to try out. It’s so nice to have a big old list of suggestions to help steer you towards new treasures. 🙂
Good grief, our number is only 28- I’m surprised. There are a lot of books I’d add, though- Where is “Green Eggs and Ham” on that list?? Definitely “Giving Thanks” by Jonathon London and illustrated by Gregory Manchess. Also “How I Became a Pirate” by Melinda Long, illustrated by David Shannon. We also love “Everywhere Babies” by Susan Meyers illustrated by Marla Frazee, and “Me Baby, You Baby” by Ashley Wolff. And of course, “Animalia” by Graeme Base! I’m sure there’s more I’ve forgotten.
Here’s a post I did about a few beautiful picture books:

Ooh, those in your post look beautiful! I’ll add them to the interlibrary loan list. And yes, it’s surprising that “Green Eggs and Ham” isn’t on the list. I can’t remember if any other Dr. Seuss books were, but maybe they thought one would do! 🙂
I would add…
You have a beautiful blog and web site. I would add “Mama Panya’s pancakes” by Mary Chamberlin and Rich Chamberlin. It’s a beautiful story about sharing and living a simple life with friends and family.
Re: I would add…
Thanks! I’ve never heard of that one but I’ll see if I can find it. It sounds wonderful.
