Here’s a wonderful idea by Joseph Cornell, author of Sharing Nature With Children:
If you listen carefully with a stethoscope, you can hear the “heartbeat” of a tree. Find a thin-barked tree more than 6 inches in diameter and place your stethoscope against its trunk. Be very quiet. Move the stethoscope around until you can hear the crackling, gurgling sound of sap flowing up to the branches.
WOW! That is AMAZING! When my daughter is older I’m definitely trying this. (I might go try it myself now…) 🙂
Thanks for sharing this. I knew trees were alive, but they are REALLY alive. No wonderful I love trees! Debby from KL, Malaysia
Beautiful!
Wow, how amazing is that! Now where can I buy a stethoscope!
We like this science surplus place online http://www.sciplus.com and they currently have one for $5.95. They also have other fun things like straw kits (you link them up with lots of bends and make giant straw contraptions to drink through) and all sorts of odd things. They’re surplus so some of the stuff is odd, cheap, etc. but they usually do a good job of telling you just what you’re getting in the description. We buy from them a couple of times a year for fun science and silly stuff. 🙂
We actually did this today!
How fun! How did it work out?
