One of my favorite parts of motherhood is getting to enjoy picture books with my children. I’ve been collecting good ones since before I had kids, and have far too many now but just can’t stop.
Here are some of my all-time favorites.
Do’s and Don’ts, by Todd Parr (totally silly and colorful fun!)
Miss Rumphius, by Barbara Cooney (this book sums up my biggest goal in life)
There’s a Nightmare in My Closet, by Mercer Mayer
But Not the Hippopotamus, by Sandra Boynton (and just about anything else by Boynton!)
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, by Judith Viorst
More, More, More! Said the Baby, by Vera B. Williams
Kiss the Cow, by Phyllis Root
Please, Baby, Please, by Spike and Tonya Lee
Big Momma Makes the World, by Phyllis Root
The Napping House, by Audrey Wood
Weird Parents, also by Audrey Wood
I could go on, but there’s a start!
What are favorites at your house?
One of my all-time favourite book is “Something From Nothing” by Phoebe Gilman. Actually, I love all of her books (she does the Jillian Jiggs series). Thanks for sharing your faves.
Tricia
Two come to mind right off the bat–
‘Hotter Than a Hotdog’… and ‘Sing, Sophie!’, which BEGS to be read and sung in your best southern drawl. Such a fun book! Which reminds me, I need to go order that one from the library. Again. 🙂
Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathman, Hugs by Jez Alborough, Love You Forever by Robert Munsch (always makes me cry!), Ballyhoo Bay By Judy Sierra. And that’s just the beginning! My twins have almost as many books in their bookcase as I do. 😉
LOVE LOVE LOVE ! Sandra Boynton! Also Clifford the Big Red Dog, Spot the Dog books, and Goodnight Moon 🙂
The Giving Tree, Shel Silverstein
All time fav!
OH, this is such a topic close to my heart…afterall, I’m a Children’s Librarian — hands down, the best job in the world after being a Mommy and a Wife.
Here’s my short list…
Best books written in 2010: Boss Baby by Marla Frazee, Even Monsters Need Haircuts by Matthew McElligott, and Art and Max by David Wiesner. Seriously Alicia, your boys will love the Monster book.
Favorite 5 books off the top of my head (that haven’t already been mentioned here)…King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub by Audrey Wood, Sleepy Bears by Mem Fox (well, really about 80% of her books are on my favorites list), the entire Epossumondas series by Coleen Salley (but seriously, read the first one), Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens, and Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester.
Oh, and an honorable mention because he’s moving up my favorite authors list…Mo Willems. I especially like the entire Knuffle (pronounced Ka-Nuffle) Bunny series and also “Edwina The dinosaur who didn’t know she was extinct”.
Books of Oliver Jeffers, books of Nick SHaratt,Some dogs can do,the bear series from barefoot books, the frog by max velthuijs are just a few I can think of at the moment.thanks for sharing your list.
We also love “Something from Nothing”. Others that come to mind are “Millions of Cats”, “Giraffes Can’t Dance”. Anything at all by Margaret Mahy (not all of hers are picture books though). Lots and lots of others but I don’t want to take over the comments…althought I may come back and add another comment later!
And another. ‘I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More’ – by Karen Beaumont. 🙂
“I ain’t gonna paint no more”…”but I’m such a nut, gonna paint my…” lol! I think the artwork just might inspire some body-painting kids, or grownups!
TODD PARR is so INCREDIBLE!!! Our ALL time– MUST READ– fave is I LOVE YOU FOREVER. IF you haven’t read it yet— do so with TISSUE! It is an extraordinary account of love and parenthood. :):)
One loved by all three of our girls and myself is “where sundancers go” by kumara tarr. The pictures are bright and beautiful and the story is rather nice:)
‘Peace at Last’ by Jill Murphy; it was my favourite when I was little and now I recite it to my girls as we walk along, and they say the words too! And ‘Dogger’, by Shirley Hughes; about a boy and his favourite toy, and how his sister helps him get it back. Most of my childhood books are now read to my kids. I love HUG too! Jez Alborough is amazing!
Jamberry by Bruce Degan, May I Bring a Friend by Beatrice De Regniers & Beni Montresor, any book about Max & Ruby by Rosemary Wells, the Putter & Tabby series by Cynthia Rylant, anything written (& illustrated) by Elisa Kleven, A Monkey Among Us by Dave Horowitz, Zoom Zoom Zoom I’m off to the Moon by Dan Yaccarino, The Little Fur Family by Margaret Wise Brown, anything written (& illustrated) by Shirley Hughs, King Bidgood’s in the Bath by Audrey Wood, and on & on & on my list could go!!!
